Reflection
I created a 5 day Kindergarten SIOP lesson about Weather using the New Generation Science Standards to be taught later this year. I look forward to using this lesson and seeing how my English Language Learners learn through this model.
What is the SIOP model?
SIOP, stands for: Sheltered, Instructional, Observation, Protocol. It was created to assist teachers instruct their English Language Learners in their class. The SIOP Model is an English only model that gives language and content support to English Language Learners.
“The SIOP Model helps teachers plan and deliver lessons that allow English learners to acquire academic knowledge as they develop English language proficiency. “ (http://www.cal.org/siop/)
The SIOP Model focuses on language objectives, so that the needs of English Language Learners are met. Vocabulary, Peer to Peer interaction and meaningful activities provide a framework for strong ELL lessons. The SIOP Model has 8 components for the teacher to follow.
1-Lesson preparation
This component focuses on building on students’ knowledge and experiences so that they can make connections with the new material. Content and Language objectives are essential to well-planned lessons.
2-Building background/Motivation
Teachers must create links between past and present lessons. Emphasis of key vocabulary is essential.
3-Comprehensible Input
The importance of teachers speaking slowly and at an appropriate language proficiency for their students is a key aspect of this component. Clear and concise instructions are modeled, shown through visuals and repeated.
4-Strategies
“Common strategies include thinking aloud, preview and prediction, prompting, elaboration, and questioning that promotes higher order thinking skills.”(http://www.nacisd.org/UserFiles/Servers/Server_3110461/Image/New%20Website%208.2016/Department%20and%20Services/Bilingual%20and%20ESL%20Education/Teachers/SIOP%208%20Components__8-10-16.pdf)
Using Multiple Intelligences allow students to become independent learners.
5-Interaction
Student discussion, peer support and social interaction is essential to English Language Learners success.
6-Practice/Application
Students need multiple hands on experiences to understand and make connections with new concepts.
7-Lesson Delivery/Presentation
How Content and language objectives are supported is the focus of this component. Content Objectives describe what students will learn in the lesson and Language Objectives describe how the student will learn the lesson.
8-Review and Assessment
Review and Assessment throughout the lesson is important in determining the pace of the lesson and to understand how the students are learning.
Which templates did you use?
I used the SIOP Lesson Plan Template 2
Which templates worked best for you?
I have only used the SIOP Lesson Plan 2 Template, but I found it easy to use and felt that it provided my students with strong language, social and content lessons.
